I created Beyond Recognition as an exploration of what happens when a familiar image loses its boundaries and becomes something open to interpretation. I work through layers of colour, gestural marks and contrasting forms, allowing the composition to develop without deciding in advance what it should represent. Soft pinks, muted blues, earthy tones and darker accents create a balance between delicacy and tension. I wanted the painting to remain somewhere between recognition and abstraction, where the viewer can find their own associations rather than being given a specific subject. For me, this is at the heart of abstract expressionism: the painting does not need to describe something recognizable in order to communicate. It can work through colour, movement, texture and emotion.
